The method

1. Living Room: Style consultation and measurement followed by layout design with suggested furniture style and dimensions; including couch, occasional chairs, rug, and coffee table to establish ‘zones’. Provided purchasing advice for a cohesive final look with budget-friendly options that would withstand the demands of young children. Style established with artwork and mirrors at right look, scale and size.

2. Kitchen & laundry: Style consultation and sourcing of splashback tiles, with recommendations for lighting and accessory purchases (e.g. bar stools). Provision of kitchen design and build contacts.

3. Bathroom: Full concept design including layout and style and tile selections. Once agreed, I recommended the relevant trades and services whilst handing over some of the final fittings, and fixtures as the client was now more confident in her ability to pull the design concept together.

4. Wardrobes and storage: Identified existing unused spaces in the home for maximising storage using built-in options. Recommended a wardrobe design company that could refit the existing wardrobes, and create built-in storage.

The result

1. Living room: A cohesive room that now makes sense for this family, and fulfills their need for adult/kid ‘zones’ through the clever use of well-dimensioned, stylish, and practical furniture and furnishings. A bit of flair and luxury provided by using the client’s wish for a deep blue colour within this zone.

2. Kitchen & laundry: A new kitchen with soft natural choices ensuring their investment endures. The lighting blends the classic and contemporary - a final flourish that completes the look. The laundry is enhanced with a classic pale blue tile, in a contemporary square shape with matt finish.

3. Ensuite: The layout of the ensuite provides a luxuriously large shower and the overall functionality is improved with added storage in the vanity. The patterned flooring tile recommended early in the project was paired with an elegant blue tile in a basket weave pattern in the shower and soft white tiles elsewhere keeping a refined balance between texture, colour and styles.

4. Family Bathroom: Whilst the budget did not extend to the family bathroom renovation, the client is confident in the design and finishes and has the trusted trades to contact, when ready to renovate this area.

5. Wardrobes & Storage: Greatly improved storage and utilisation of previously wasted space.
